Bulldog Olde English Bulldogge Grooming

The Bulldog-Olde English Bulldogge mix has the same coat type as that of its parent breeds: short and smooth. The coats are pretty simple to care for--but they do shed regularly, so consistent brushing will be necessary to reduce the amount of shed hairs. Otherwise, overall Bulldog-Olde English Bulldogge grooming isn't at all difficult.

Brush your Bulldog-OEB mix 2-3 times per week with a stiff bristle brush or a grooming glove. First wet the coat with water mist from a spray bottle, then go through the coat section by section with the brush or glove, moving in the direction of hair growth.

A Bulldog-Olde English Bulldogge bath will be needed every three months or so--unless, of course, the dog gets especially dirty or stinky and an "emergency bath" is called for. When bathing these hybrids, be sure to use shampoo made for dogs, as the human kind has a different pH and can irritate the dog's skin.

Your Bulldog-OEB might have a lot of wrinkles on its face, head, and neck like the Bulldog does--and if so, you'll need to monitor the skin in between the wrinkles to make sure it doesn't get too dirty. If needed, clean between the folds with a wet, soapy rag--or just use a baby wipe.

These hybrids' coats are simply too short to sport any hairstyles other than their natural ones--so no haircuts are required.(See the Styling & Haircuts section below to find out why shaving a Bulldog-Olde English Bulldogge coat isn't a good idea.)

In addition to its coat, your Bulldog-OEB will need regular maintenance in other areas. Brush the dog's teeth 2-3 times per week with a regular toothbrush (but use canine toothpaste); clean the ears monthly using canine ear cleaning solution; and trim the dog's nails every 2-3 months with standard nail clippers.

Though owners can easily learn to perform all aspects of Bulldog-Olde English Bulldogge grooming themselves, it's a good idea to take the dog to a professional groomer at least once. The groomer can give the dog a nice makeover, and provide tips on how to groom a Bulldog-Olde English Bulldogge at home.

Bulldog Olde English Bulldogge Styling & Haircuts

Because of this hybrid's short coat, no Bulldog-Olde English Bulldogge haircuts are necessary. Even so, some owners believe shaving the coat will reduce the amount of shedding and help keep the dog cool. As professional groomers will tell you, though, shaving these dogs is not recommended.

In a nutshell, a shaved Bulldog-Olde English Bulldogge won't shed any less; the only difference would be that the shed hairs would just be shorter. And a shaved Bulldog-OEB might actually be cooler on hot days--but only in the shade. The dog's coat protects its skin from the sun. So in direct sunlight, a shaved Bulldog-Olde English Bulldogge will be much more susceptible to heatstroke and sunburn. The shaved dog will get cold very easily as well. And when the coat does grow back, it'll likely be uneven and softer in texture.

The only reason to shave any part of these dogs' coats is in preparation for surgery or other medical procedures. Your vet will discuss this with you further.

So to anyone considering shaving their Bulldog-OEB's coat: put those clippers away!
