Pekepoo Grooming

The Peekapoo, as a hybrid mix of a Pekingese and a Poodle, has a wavy to curly coat that is more Poodle-like in texture and length. The coats, like the Poodle's, will require a good bit of care. (A few Peekapoo dogs have straighter, longer coats like that of the Pekingese, but these are pretty rare.)

Here you'll find details on maintaining the Peekapoo coat, including plenty of info on brushing and bathing. You'll also learn about popular Peekapoo hairstyles. Get answers to your questions about Peekapoo grooming in the following sections!

Pekepoo Coat Care

Overall Peekapoo grooming can take some work--and a good bit of that time will be spent maintaining these hybrids' wavy to curly coats.

Brushing will need to happen 3-4 times per week, if not daily, to minimize the development of tangles and mats. Brushing and grooming Peekapoo dogs is best done with either a pin or a slicker brush. To brush a Peekapoo: first wet the coat with water mist from a spray bottle (with some leave-in conditioner added if desired). Then starting at the shoulders, go through the coat section by section with the brush, moving in the direction of hair growth. If you run across a tangle or mat, first try working it out with your fingers, then if needed continue working through it with the end teeth of a greyhound comb.

Baths will generally be required monthly, unless of course the dog gets especially dirty or stinky and an "emergency bath" is in order. When bathing a Peekapoo, be sure to use canine shampoo and conditioner, as the kind made for humans has a different pH and will irritate the dog's skin. Also make sure to rinse all the soap from your Peekapoo's coat. Not doing so will cause further skin irritation. And after the bath, it's best to dry the coat with a hair dryer on its lowest heat setting.

These hybrids' wavy coats can sport a number of hairstyles as well. (See the Styling & Haircuts section below for more info.)

Though it's possible for owners to learn how to fulfill all the Peekapoo grooming needs themselves, many people rely on professional groomers for major tasks like bathing and haircuts. In any case, it's a good idea to take your Peekapoo to a pro at least once. The groomer can give the dog a nice makeover, and provide tips on how to groom a Peekapoo dog at home.

Pekepoo Styling & Haircuts

These dogs' fluffy coats make many Peekapoo haircut styles possible. It's important to note that this mixed breed's hair grows faster than that of most other breeds, so Peekapoo hair cuts will need to happen regularly.

Some of the most popular Peekapoo hairstyles:

  • Puppy Cut: A very low-maintenance style. The entire coat is clipped short (to about two inches). Some people like to leave the hair on the face, head, and legs a bit longer. Can be done at home with some practice.
  • Show Trim: This cut leaves most of the length over the entire coat. All the hair is trimmed with scissors, and the hair on the face and legs is rounded and evened out. Best done by a groomer.
  • Teddy Bear Cut: Similar to a Puppy Cut, but the hair on the face, head, ears, and legs is carefully rounded to make the dog resemble an adorable stuffed animal. Probably best done by a groomer.
  • Town and Country Cut: A very stylish look. The hair on the body is clipped short, but the leg hair is left longer and sculpted into a cylindrical pattern. The hair on the ears and tail is rounded and teased out. Definitely needs a groomer's touch.
