Pekepoo Care

The Pekepoo--a hybrid of a Pekingese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle--is the offspring of two companion breeds, so it's a perfect little companion breed itself. Overall Pekepoo care won't take a great deal of work, but will need to include--what else?--plenty of TLC to return the love these hybrids are so willing to give.

Below you'll find details on caring for a Pekepoo, including puppy development, exercise needs, and shedding/drooling tendencies. For answers to your questions about raising a Pekepoo, read on!

Pekepoo Exercise Needs

Overall, Pekepoo exercise requirements aren't too extensive. These dogs will fulfill a lot of their daily activity needs just running around being their playful little selves, but they'll still benefit from a short walk or two and a brief period of play each day.

The typical adult Pekepoo, depending on its age and overall activity level, will only need about 30 minutes of proper exercise each day. You can start exercising your Pekepoo puppy at 2½ old by taking it on short walks, then you can increase the walks' length as the puppy grows.

Precautions with Pekepoo exercise:

  • Don't exercise puppies too hard before they're eight months old
  • Leash is required when exercising in public
  • Due to possible separation anxiety, exercises are best done together with people
  • Pekepoos get cold easily, so don't exercise outdoors in freezing temperatures

It's important to exercise your Pekepoo every single day. These hybrids can be temperamental, and without consistent activity they'll become incredibly fussy, "yappy," and disobedient. Regular exercise will be great for both the dog's and your own peace of mind! A few Pekepoo exercise ideas:

  • Walking: Two 10-minute walks per day is a good target
  • Fetch: Can be played indoors or out; use the dog's favorite toy
  • Hide-and-Seek: Great indoor activity; give the dog a treat when it finds you
  • Dog Park: If properly socialized, Pekepoos enjoy the company of other dogs
  • Laser Pointer: These dogs go nuts chasing that "little red dot"

When indoors, it's a good idea to give your Pekepoo access to balls or toys that will allow the dog to burn excess energy. It's also recommended that you establish a regular exercise routine for the dog, such as walks after breakfast and dinner and a play period in the afternoon.

Pekepoo Maintenance

In terms of shedding and drooling, these dogs don't need much care--though they will require a lot of grooming overall. Pekepoo shedding is minimal, and drooling isn't an issue.

Pekepoos usually have coats like their Poodle parents--single-layered and curly. And like the Poodle, the Pekepoo coat doesn't shed much at all. Even so, these hybrids will need daily brushing and frequent baths to keep the coats from matting or tangling.

A Pekepoo hardly ever drools, either. If your Pekepoo is drooling excessively, it might be a sign of a medical issue, in which case a veterinarian's care is needed.

Temperature Range

Peek-A-Poos must be kept in mild, relatively dry environments. If it is too cold or too hot, they may contract respiratory problems due to a short trachea that does not allow air to warm up or cool down on the way to the lungs.
