Giant Schnoodle Grooming

The Giant Schnoodle, as a hybrid mix of a Giant Schnauzer and a Standard Poodle, will have pretty moderate grooming needs. The coats can be more like that of either parent breed, but are usually somewhere in the middle: medium-length, soft, and wavy to curly.

Brush your Giant Schnoodle 2-3 times per week with a slicker brush, moving in the direction of hair growth. The coats don't shed much, but they do develop tangles fairly easily--so if you run across a tangle, try working it out with either your fingers or the end teeth of a greyhound comb (or both).

Baths will generally be needed every 2-3 months. When bathing a Giant Schnoodle, be sure to use shampoo made for dogs, as the human kind can irritate the dog's skin.

And depending on the coat's texture, these hybrids will need either clipping or stripping every three months or so. (See more details in Styling & Haircuts below.)

Your Giant Schnoodle will also need maintenance in other areas. Brush the dog's teeth 2-3 times per week; clean the ears monthly; and trim the dog's nails every 6-8 weeks.

Though owners can learn how to perform all aspects of Giant Schnoodle grooming themselves, many people rely on professional groomers for major tasks like bathing and haircuts. In any case, it's good to take the dog to a pro at least once. The groomer can give the dog a nice makeover, and provide tips on how to groom a Giant Schnoodle at home.

Giant Schnoodle Styling & Haircuts

The Giant Schnoodle coat sometimes favors that of the Schnauzer's and is wiry in texture. More often, though, the coat is softer and wavy to curly like the Poodle's.

More "Schnauzer-esque" coats will need to be hand-stripped every few months, whereby the dead hairs are "plucked" to make the coat look healthy and fresh. The process, while not difficult, is time-consuming (up to two hours for dogs of this size), so a lot of people have a groomer do it--but it can be done at home with some patience, and the dog's coat will look great.

Stripping isn't required, though. Regardless of coat texture, a variety of Giant Schnoodle haircuts are possible. Depending on the style, your Schnoodle will need a touch-up trim every 2-3 months.

Three popular Giant Schnoodle hairstyles:

  • Puppy Cut: A low-maintenance style. The entire coat is clipped short (to about two inches). Some people like to leave the hair on the legs, face, and head a bit longer. Can be done at home with some practice.
  • Show Cut: Leaves most of the length, but requires some precision. The coat is scissor-trimmed by only a half-inch or so, and often thinned out with thinning shears. The hair on the face and head is rounded and even. Requires a groomer's expertise.
  • Town and Country Cut: This sophisticated style sees the hair on the body clipped short, but the hair on the legs is left longer and sculpted in cylindrical patterns. The hair on the face, head, and tail is rounded and teased out. Definitely needs a groomer's skill.
