Smooth Fox Terrier Care

The Smooth Fox Terrier (SFT) is a small- to medium-sized, active terrier breed that has the "Triple T," or "typical terrier temperament." Though affectionate and loyal, these dogs can have obedience issues unless trained otherwise from an early age. Overall Smooth Fox Terrier care and maintenance won't take a ton of work, but will need to include daily exercise and early training and socialization.

Below you'll find details on caring for a Smooth Fox Terrier including puppy development, exercise and grooming needs, and more. Find answers to your questions about raising a Smooth Fox Terrier in the following sections!

Smooth Fox Terrier Exercise Needs

These dogs are lively and energetic--but they're also pretty small, so Smooth Fox Terrier exercise requirements are only moderate. Since SFTs are intelligent and curious, they'll need a variety of activities that both condition them physically (walking, fetch) and stimulate them mentally (games, canine sports).

Adult SFTs will need about 45 minutes of dedicated exercise each day. You can start exercising your SFT puppy when it's 2½-3 months old by taking it on short walks, then you can increase the walks' length as the pup grows.

Precautions with Smooth Fox Terrier exercise:

  • Don't exercise puppies too hard before they're eight months old
  • High prey drive means a leash is required when exercising in public; leash training during puppyhood is recommended
  • Yards should be securely fenced to keep the dog from running off
  • Prone to obesity; regular exercise needed to keep the pounds off

Exercising your SFT every day is a must. These dogs have the well-known "Triple T"--typical terrier temperament--so they'll dig, bark, chew, and chase other pets a lot; without consistent activity to burn that energy, they'll become behavioral nightmares! Regular exercise will be great for both the dog's and your own peace of mind. Some exercise ideas:

  • Walking: Two 15-minute walks per day is a good target
  • Fetch/Frisbee: SFTs love chasing a ball, stick, or Frisbee
  • Hide-and-Seek: Great indoor activity; give the dog a treat when it finds you
  • Dog Park: If properly socialized, SFTs enjoy the company of other dogs
  • Canine Sports: These dogs can excel at obedience or agility trials and other events
  • Laser Pointer: These dogs will go nuts chasing that "little red dot"

When indoors, balls or toys will help your SFT burn any excess energy. It's also recommended that you have a regular exercise schedule for the dog, such as walks after breakfast and dinner and playtime in the afternoon.

Smooth Fox Terrier Maintenance

These dogs don't need too much maintenance overall. Smooth Fox Terrier shedding is pretty light, and drooling isn't an issue.

SFTs have short, smooth coats (hence the breed name) that don't shed very much, though the shedding is year-round and not seasonal. Owners will need to brush their SFTs once or twice a week with a bristle brush or grooming glove to keep the shedding to a minimum, and hair cleanup--vacuuming the floors, and lint rollers on clothes and furniture--will only be required once in a while.

A Smooth Fox Terrier almost never drools, either. If your Smooth Fox Terrier is drooling excessively, it might be due to a medical issue, in which case a veterinarian's care is needed.
