Sharp Eagle Dog Breed

The Sharp Eagle is a hybrid mix of a Chinese Shar-Pei and a Beagle. As a crossbreed, a Sharp Eagle will inherit traits from both parent breeds--and not all Sharp Eagles will exhibit the same characteristics (even those born in the same litter). In general, a Sharp Eagle is medium-sized and short-haired, often with fairly loose, wrinkly skin; this crossbreed will be intelligent and active, but its overall personality can vary a good bit depending on inherited traits.

Potential Sharp Eagle owners are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Shar-Pei and the Beagle breeds, as most crossbred dogs will inherit more traits from one parent breed than from the other.

Sharp Eagle Breed Details

The Shar-Pei and Beagle mix, as a crossbreed, is not an official member of any breed group. Neither does any info exist about these hybrids' specific origin; while a Beagle and Shar-Pei cross has probably existed naturally for a long time, no breeder or breed club has claimed its creation. The Sharp Eagle dog breed likely gained popularity during the designer dog "explosion" in North America in the late 20th century. Whatever the case, these curious, loyal, sometimes stubborn hybrids will make great pets for owners willing to provide the training and socialization they need.

A few facts about the Shar-Pei x Beagle cross: they're small- to medium-sized, averaging 17 inches at the shoulders in height and 35 pounds in weight; they have short, stiff coats that shed moderately, and they usually inherit the Shar-Pei's loose, wrinkly skin; and they'll need early training and socialization in order to learn respectful behavior.

Sharp Eagle Breed Description

Important Shar Pei-Beagle mix information: these hybrids are the offspring of two breeds that, aside from both being medium-sized and athletic, don't have a whole lot in common. The Chinese Shar-Pei is powerful, reserved, and aloof; the Beagle, meanwhile, is friendly, curious, and fairly "tender" personality-wise. This means the Sharp Eagle can lean one way or the other in terms of temperament.

A Sharp Eagle will be medium-sized, at 15-19 inches at the shoulders in height and 25-45 pounds in weight. Their coats are short, stiff, and possibly double-layered like the Beagle's; the coats shed moderately, and they may shed heavier in the spring and fall (in which case they're not good for allergy sufferers). The coats come in a wide variety of colors, usually in multi-colored patterns, that include black, brown, white, red, blue, cream, and more.

When it comes to temperament, these hybrids can be friendly or standoffish, confident or meek, and often all those qualities at different times. A Sharp Eagle will, however, be intelligent and loyal to its owners, and can get along pretty well with kids and other pets (though it may inherit the Shar-Pei's instinctive dominance over other dogs, particularly those of the same sex). These dogs tend to be pretty stubborn, too, so training them can be a challenge. In any case, owners will need to provide lots of training and socialization (starting during puppyhood, if possible) to ensure the dog doesn't get too strong-willed.

And Sharp Eagles will be pretty energetic, so they'll need outdoor exercise on a daily basis. While these hybrids can adapt to apartment living, homes with larger fenced yards are best.

Sharp Eagle Health

The Sharp Eagle, due to hybrid vigor (in which a crossbred dog inherits the healthiest traits of its parent breeds), is pretty healthy. Even so, these hybrids can suffer ailments common to the parent breeds including hip and/or elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, hypothyroidism, and various eye issues like Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) or glaucoma, among others. Potential Sharp Eagle owners are advised to ask breeders for health screenings for the dog and/or its parents, or they can have their own veterinarians do the screenings.

Life expectancy for the Sharp Eagle is 9-14 years.
