Because of his exuberance, he may be too much dog for first time dog owners and he may also not be suitable for young children. Due to it's size and natural disposition, small children should be supervised to avoid knocking over type accidents; as this breed is extremely protective, kids could end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. They are especially good companions for older people and apartment dwellers. Sco-Shi are known to be very amicable and eager to please older youngsters and familiar adults.
The Sco-Shi is a great family dog and plays well with mature children, but they have a tendency to chase smaller animals. They are not high energy but instead calm and laid-back and are never aggressive, even around strangers. They are not aggressive or territorial and lack natural hunting instincts. However, they shouldn't be left alone for long periods of time as this may lead to unhappiness and damaging behavior. Small, vivacious and full of life, these dogs are not for the first-time owner as they can be stubborn to train, and need a strong leader to respect.
