Havashire Dog Breed

Other names:
Yorkenese Terrier

The Havashire is a hybrid dog which is bred by crossing a Havanese with a Yorkshire Terrier. As a hybrid dog it will inherit the physical and behavioral traits of both the parent breeds. However, not all Havashires will inherit the same characteristics (even if from the same litter).

Havashires are small dogs with a long, silky coat that can come in a wide variety and combination of colors. They will need a high amount of maintenance for their coats, including regular brushing. This breed is usually kept indoor and will be active there, but also requires a daily walk. They are friendly towards strangers, and good pets for families with children and other pets. Few health issues have been documented in their breed and with good fortune the life expectancy can be 12 to 14 years.

Havashire Breed Description

This is a small dog breed, as are the Havanese and Yorkshire Terrier. Members of this breed general weigh 8-15 pounds and stand about 12 inches tall.

Havashires are happy and affectionate, which makes this is a great dog for an owner of any age and for households with children. They also get along well with other pets as they are playful and friendly. Members of this breed are not easily trained, requiring a firm and patient owner.

The Havashire is a high maintenance dog breed. These dogs are active indoors, but will require at least a daily short walk. They are also very playful and affectionate, and if not given the exercise and attention they need may become yappy. Even though this is low shedding dog, regular brushing must be performed to prevent tangles.

Havashire Breed History

The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba and likely arrived on trade ships, while the Yorkshire Terrier has been around in England since the nineteenth century. Although both parent breeds have detailed history, the Havashire is a newcomer. Due to the popularity of designer breeds, the Havashire most likely came about recently and gained popularity in the United States in the last decade.

Havashire Appearance

As a crossbreed, the Havashire will inherit physical traits from both parent breeds. Not all Havashires will inherit the same traits which means some may have more Havanese characteristics, others may have more Yorkshire Terrier characteristics, and some may show a mix of both parent breeds. It is likely, however, that the majority of Havashires will have traits common in both the parent breeds.

The Havashire is a small dog with a long, silky coat that comes in many colors including black, tan, gold, blue, brindle, chocolate, fawn, white, and silver. They usually also have lively brown eyes and a tail that is held high. The ears may be dropped and folded like the Havanese or erect like the Yorkshire Terrier. Their bodies are compact and well-proportioned, but they may look slightly longer than tall if they inherit more Havanese characteristics.

Havashire Temperament

The temperament of the Havashire is dependent on the behavioral traits inherited from its parents. Some will inherit traits from the Yorkshire Terrier, others the Havanese, and some will have a mix of behaviors inherited from both parent breeds.

These dogs are friendly and social, so they are capable of being walked in a dog park or meeting strangers. Due to their happy and affectionate nature, they make great dogs for owners of any age, as well as families with small children. This makes a fine addition to a multi-pet household, since they are playful and energetic even with other pets. Havashires are trainable and need strong guidance to avoid "small dog syndrome".

Havashire Maintenance

Overall, the Havashire is a high maintenance dog breed. These dogs are active indoors, but will require at least a daily short walk. They are also very playful and affectionate, and if not given the exercise and attention they need may become yappy. Even though this is low shedding dog, regular brushing must be performed to prevent tangles.

Grooming Requirements

Although this dog will be a minimal shedder, it will require a high amount of grooming. The coat is typically long and silky, which requires regular brushing to avoid tangles. Many owners choose to clip this breed, leaving them short coated.

Exercise Requirements

These dogs will be active indoors. Although this breed is not known to bark frequently, if not given daily exercise time these dogs may become yappy and restless. A daily walk should be sufficient to meet its exercise needs. Havashires are friendly, playful, and energetic, and therefore do very well at dog parks.

Living Requirements

Members of this breed usually make better indoor pets than outdoor pets. They do not do well in extreme temperatures and have a natural disposition to seek companionship.

Havashire Health

These dogs do not have many documented health issues, probably due to the fact they are not purebred. It is recommended to be familiar with the health issues of the Yorkshire Terrier and the Havanese, such as hip dyspasia, patellar luxation, and eye problems. The Havashire breed will typically live 12-14 years in good health.
