Hamiltonstövare Breed Description

This is a medium to large sized breed. Adult males will reach a height of 21 - 24 inches; females will reach a height of 19 – 22 inches. These dogs will generally weigh between 50 and 60 lbs. As larger hounds, Hamiltonstovares are hunters that can conquer any terrain and make for solid guardians, though they will require a heavy exercise regimen.

These hounds are well-mannered, friendly, and good with kids. Though they may be somewhat protective of their family, these dogs are not aggressive unless they sense a serious threat, and they should do fine around other dogs if properly socialized.

The Hamiltonstovare is a medium maintenance breed. Their grooming needs are minimal, but their exercise needs are well above average. Expect to spend up to 2 hours exercising a day if the dog is not being put to work.

Hamiltonstövare Breed History

This breed originated in Sweden in the 19th century. The breed was developed by Adolf Hamilton, who sought a hound that could hunt in Sweden’s harsh winter climates. Most experts agree that this breed’s ancestors include the Foxhound and a mixture of German hounds such as the Heiderbracke, the Harrier, and the Holsteiner Hound. This breed was first shown in Sweden in 1886, and has remained the most popular hound there since. Outside of Sweden these dogs are very rare, though they are gaining some popularity in the UK.

Hamiltonstövare Appearance

Strong and elegant, the Hamiltonstovare is a handsome dog that will definitely turn heads. The rectangular frame is muscular and well-proportioned. Their distinctly patterned double coat is short, smooth and weather-resistant. The head is broad and framed by two large floppy ears that fall forward onto the cheek.

Hamiltonstövare Temperament

The Hamiltonstovare excels both as a hunter and a companion. These dogs are known for their sweet disposition and love of people; they want to be around their family and will not be happy if left alone for great periods of time. They are somewhat aloof, however, and may take some encouragement to follow prescribed orders. If left to their own devices and not given a stimulating task, these dogs may behave poorly out of boredom. Hunting and tracking is part of this dog’s heritage so care should be taken to make sure this dog cannot escape - it may wander for miles on its own little hunt. These dogs may be wary of strangers and bark, though they should never be aggressive unless they feel their owners are in danger.

Hamiltonstövare Maintenance

This is a medium maintenance breed. Grooming is easy and doesn’t need to be done often. Exercise, however, is much more demanding: if they aren’t working or hunting, these dogs will need to be exercised for about two hours each day.

Grooming Requirements

Grooming this dog's resilient coat is fairly straightforward. Give it a thorough brushing once or twice a week, and a bath every so often as needed.

Exercise Requirements

This breed of dog loves hunting and working and can become bored and destructive if left unstimulated. It needs a considerable amount of exercise to stay physically fit and mentally stimulated. Expect to spend up to two hours a day exercising this dog if it is not being put to the hunt or otherwise working.

Living Requirements

Homes with ample space for running and patrolling are best for this breed. As a dog with a very high energy capacity and deeply ingrained hunting instincts, the Hamiltonstovare will not be pleased living in a cramped urban environment.

Hamiltonstövare Health

This breed is considered healthy and has a life expectancy of 10 - 13 years. At this time there are no known genetic defects.
