Double Doodle Grooming

The Double Doodle (DD)--a hybrid of a Labradoodle and a Goldendoodle, or some combination of Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, and Poodle--can have a bit of coat variety, from medium to long and from wavy to tightly curled. In most cases, though, the DD coat is medium-long and loosely curled. And since the genes for the Poodle coat tend to be dominant, most (but not all) DDs are low-shedding and hypoallergenic. Overall, Double Doodle grooming will take a moderate amount of work, and will consist mostly of frequent brushing and haircuts.

See below for further details on maintaining the Double Doodle coat.

Double Doodle Coat Care

Double Doodle grooming should take a moderate amount of work overall. Depending on the DD's coat type, these dog's usually don't shed much--but the coats can mat and tangle easily (particularly if the coat is more
Poodle-like), so brushing will be required 2-3 times per week. Baths are necessary every 6-8 weeks, and haircuts are needed about every three months (for which many owners employ a professional groomer).

Brushing: Owners will need both a pin brush and a 2-in-1 comb. To brush: first wet the coat with mist from a spray bottle (and you can add a bit of de-tangling solution to the water if you like), then starting at the shoulders, use the typical line brushing technique over the entire coat, moving in the direction of hair growth. If you encounter a tangle or mat, first try working through it with your fingers, then continue working it out with the comb.

Bathing: DDs can be bathed in either a bathtub or an outdoor kiddie pool with a garden hose. First give the dog a thorough brushing, then wet the coat completely. Next apply a quarter-sized amount of shampoo to the dog's back (and be sure to use canine shampoo, as the kind made for humans can irritate the dog's skin); lather well, working downward as you go. (Don't forget the legs, underbelly, and tail!) Finish by using a washcloth to clean the dog's head, ears, and face, making sure not to get soap in the eyes. Rinse thoroughly, towel-dry, then give the coat another quick brush-through to make it look clean and neat.

Haircuts: These hybrids will need their coats clipped and/or scissored every few months to keep them from becoming too unruly. While it's entirely possible to cut your DD's coat at home, many owners prefer to take their DDs to a professional groomer. In any case, at least one trip to the groomer is recommended; the groomer can demonstrate the proper hair-cutting method, and offer advice on possible hairstyles and on how to groom a Double Doodle in general.
