Dogue De Bordeaux Grooming

The Dogue de Bordeaux is a large, muscular dog that sheds moderately and requires little coat care. These dogs will, however, need regular maintenance in other areas. See below for more info on care including facial cleanliness, teeth, ears, nails, and excessive drooling.

Other Care

A Dogue de Bordeaux will need a moderate amount of care in these areas:

  • Facial wrinkles: The loose wrinkles on a DDB's face trap dirt and moisture, which will lead to infections and bad odor. Owners will need to clean their Dogue's faces often with a damp cloth or a sanitary wipe to minimize these issues. (Many owners say they keep a rag on hand just for this purpose, and wipe their DDB's face after the dog eats, drinks water, or plays outdoors.)
  • Teeth: Just like a human's, Dogue de Bordeaux teeth need regular brushing to prevent tartar buildup and bad breath. Brush your Dogue's teeth once or twice a week using canine toothpaste, as the human kind can make the dog sick if he swallows it.
  • Ears: Dirt, debris, and moisture can get trapped in these dogs' ears and become infected. Once a week, check inside a Dogue's ears, and if needed clean the area with a cotton ball and a gentle, vet-approved cleanser.
  • Nails: A good rule of thumb is that if a dog's nails "click" when it walks/runs on hard surfaces, it's time for a trim. Clip your Dogue's nails with standard nail clippers--but be careful not to clip them too short. Doing so will cut into the nail's "quick" (the vein running through the nail), and make it bleed and be painful.
  • Drooling: DDBs are known to drool excessively, so it's a good idea to keep a separate rag handy for cleaning up slobber. These dogs may drool so much that their necks and chests get wet and dirty, so tying a bandanna or old towel around a Dogue's neck might be necessary.
