Corgipoo Care

The Corgipoo--a hybrid of either a Cardigan Welsh Corgi or a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and either a Toy Poodle or a Standard Poodle--is an enthusiastic, fun-loving, "trickster" crossbreed that can have some variation in size. Overall Corgipoo care and maintenance won't take a ton of work, but will require some daily exercise--along with a good sense of humor!

Below you'll find details on caring for a Corgipoo, including info about puppy development, exercise needs, shedding and drooling tendencies, and more. Get answers to your questions about raising a Corgipoo in the following sections!

Corgipoo Exercise Needs

These dogs have a lot of energy--but they normally tire out rather easily, so depending on their size, Corgipoo exercise requirements are low to moderate. These mischievous hybrids will need a variety of activities that both condition them physically (walking, fetch) and stimulate them mentally (games, canine sports). Larger Corgipoos will make good jogging companions as well.

Adult Corgipoos bred from Toy Poodles will only need about 30 minutes of dedicated exercise per day, while larger ones (with Standard Poodle parents) will need 45 minutes or so. You can start exercising your Corgipoo puppy when it's 2½-3 months old by taking it on short walks, then you can increase the walks' length as the pup grows.

Precautions with Corgipoo exercise:

  • Don't exercise puppies to hard before they're 8-9 months old
  • A leash is required when exercising in public
  • Yards should be securely fenced to keep the dog from running off
  • Possible separation anxiety; exercises should be done together with people

It's important to exercise your Corgipoo. These dogs are lively and enthusiastic--and with their "trickster" personalities, without consistent activity they'll become disobedient, frustrating nightmares! Regular exercise will be great for both the dog's and your own peace of mind. A few exercise ideas:

  • Walking: Two 15-minute walks per day is a good target
  • Fetch: Can be played indoors with the dog's favorite toy, or outdoors with a ball or stick
  • Hide-and-Seek: Great indoor activity; give the dog a treat when it finds you
  • Canine Sports: Corgipoos can excel at obedience or agility trials and other events
  • Dog Park: These hybrids usually enjoy the company of other dogs
  • Laser Pointer: Your Corgipoo will go nuts chasing that little red dot

When indoors, balls or toys will allow your Corgipoo to burn excess energy. It's also good to have a regular exercise schedule for the dog, such as walks after breakfast and dinner and playtime in the afternoon.

Corgipoo Maintenance

These hybrids need little maintenance overall. Corgipoo shedding is minimal, and drooling isn't an issue.

Corgipoos usually have wiry, double-layered coats that don't shed much, thanks to the hypoallergenic Poodle's genes. Owners will need to brush their Corgipoos once or twice a week to collect the few dead hairs that do show up, and hair cleanup--vacuuming the floors, and lint rollers on clothes and furniture--will rarely be necessary.

And a Corgipoo almost never drools. If your Corgipoo is drooling excessively, it might be a sign of a medical issue, in which case a veterinarian's care is needed.
