Cirneco Delletna Breed Description

The Cirneco dell'Etna is an agile rabbit hunter--and an equally good playmate. This attractive, slender breed is skilled at chasing small game or accompanying its owner in the show ring--and of course, the Cirneco is a fantastic cuddle buddy as well. These dogs are smart, so they can learn things pretty quickly--but they're also independent and even stubborn, so they'll do best if training starts during puppyhood.

One of the best Cirneco traits is the dog's versatility. The dog will wake at the crack of dawn to accompany its owner on a hunt, be put through its paces at the local dog show, play Frisbee with the kids for an hour, and curl up on the couch to watch some TV--all in the same day! And the dog will perform all those activities with enthusiasm, gentleness, and skill.

And as hunting dogs, Cirnecos have plenty of energy; they're strong for their size, lightning-fast, and extremely dexterous. Obviously, this breed will need a lot of daily physical activity.

Cirneco Delletna Temperament

Active, intelligent, gentle, and at times independent, the Cirneco dell'Etna temperament is one of friendly energy. These dogs have plenty of versatility, so they're good in a variety of situations--but they can also be both sensitive and headstrong, so they'll probably need early obedience training. Cirnecos are usually good with kids and other pets, too. As with any breed, it's best if the dog is raised alongside any children and other household animals. Since this is a hunting breed, owners will need to take special precautions if smaller pets like rabbits or birds are part of the family pet posse.

In regards to training, a Cirneco dell'Etna will usually respond well. These dogs are good at learning tasks, tricks, and commands--but because of their independence, a few repetitions my be necessary. Positive training methods that include plenty of praise are best.

Unfortunately, the Cirneco dell'Etna won't make the best watchdog. While alert and curious, the Cirneco doesn't bark too much, so the dog probably won't raise a vocal alarm if it notices an unknown sight or sound. And these dogs aren't very bold, so they won't neutrailize potential threats like intruders.

The Cirneco dell'Etna is an extremely healthy breed overall. No inherited health issues are known for these dogs; as an athletic hunting breed, though, they may suffer from joint or structural ailments like hip dysplasia or luxating patella.
