cavapoochon Care

The Cavapoochon is a "triple cross": a mix of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a Teacup Poodle, and a Bichon Frise. (Most breeders actually use a Cavachon, or Cavalier-Bichon mix, and a Teacup Poodle to breed these dogs.) Regardless of their genetic makeup, Cavapoochons are lively and friendly, are they make great, cuddly companion dogs! Overall Cavapoochon care won't take too much work, but will need to include daily exercise and a good bit of grooming.

Here you'll find details on caring for a Cavapoochon, including info about puppy development, exercise needs, and sheding and drooling tendencies. Get answers to your questions about raising a Cavapoochon in the following sections!

cavapoochon Exercise Needs

Though lively and energetic, these hybrids are pretty small--so Cavapoochon exercise needs aren't very extensive. Still, Cavapoochons are usually very intelligent, so they'll need a variety of activities that both condition them physically (walking, fetch) and stimulate them mentally (games, canine sports).

Adult Cavapoochons will only need about 30 minutes of dedicated exercise per day, with the total amount depending on the dog's age, size, and overall activity level. You can start exercising your Cavapoochon puppy when it's 2½-3 months old by going on short walks, then you can increase the walks' length and frequency as the pup grows.

Precautions with Cavapoochon exercise:

  • Don't exercise puppies too hard before they're eight months old
  • A leash is recommended when exercising in public
  • Yards must be securely fenced to keep the dog from running off
  • Prone to separation anxiety; exercises best done together with people
  • Sensitive to weather extremes; don't exercise in freezing or sweltering temps

It's generally a good idea to exercise your Cavapoochon every day. Though they're usually friendly and good-natured, without consistent activity these hybrids can become anxious, disobedient, and destructive. Regular exercise will be great for both the dog's and your own peace of mind! A few Cavapoochon exercise ideas:

  • Walking: Two 10-minute walks per day is a good target
  • Fetch: Can be played indoors or out; use the dog's favorite toy
  • Hide-and-Seek: Great indoor activity; give the dog a treat when it finds you
  • Dog Park: If properly socialized, these hybrids enjoy the company of other dogs
  • Canine Sports: Cavapoochons can excel at obedience or agility trials and other events
  • Laser Pointer: These hybrids will go nuts chasing that "little red dot"

When indoors, giving your Cavapoochon access to balls or toys will allow the dog to burn excess energy. It's also good to have a regular exercise schedule for the dog, such as walks after breakfast and dinner and playtime in the afternoon.

cavapoochon Maintenance

In terms of shedding and drooling, these mixes don't need much care, but their grooming requirements are pretty extensive. Cavapoochon shedding is minimal, and drooling isn't an issue.

Cavapoochons usually have medium-length, wavy coats that don't shed much. In fact, these hybrids were developed to be hypoallergenic, so they're usually good for allergy sufferers. Even so, they'll need regular grooming: frequent brushing with a slicker brush to keep the coats from matting and tangling, and the coats will need to be clipped (either by a groomer or by owners themselves) every 4-6 weeks to keep them looking good. If a Cavapoochon's coat is properly maintained, though, hair cleanup will rarely be required.

And these dogs almost never drool. If your Cavapoochon is drooling excessively, that might be a sign of a medical issue, in which case a veterinarian's care is needed.
