These dogs are also known by other names: the French Pointer, the Saint-Germain Pointer and the Saint-Germain Pointing Dog.

Braque Saint-germain Breed Description

The Braque Saint-Germain looks not unlike the English Pointer, but they are much different. These dogs straddle the medium and large dog sizes, and they are highly economical: nothing about their physical form gets in the way of their work. They are sleek yet strong, fast yet agile. They prefer working in pairs or small packs, are not dog-aggressive and are renowned as hunters.

The intelligence of the Braque Saint-Germain is high, and they are able to work alone, with other dogs and on the move. They were bred to be versatile — which is typical of French hunting dogs, as opposed to the singular purpose of any given traditional English hunting dog — and this lends greatly to their sharp minds.

These pointers can find, track, and retrieve game, and they have a "soft mouth: they are able to easily bring back downed game without further injury. They are loyal, but they are also very friendly with people in general. These dogs tend to be highly sensitive, and while they make great gun dogs, their performance can be significantly impaired if you use harsh training methods.

The Braque Saint-Germain is a very disciplined dog. They have a great amount of strength and stamina, but they are not hyperactive. A long day of hunting, hiking, or biking is a day they will love. Measured exercise that allows them to pace their activity is perfect for these dogs.

Braque Saint-germain Health

The Braque Saint-Germain has endured a lot of regional and worldwide disasters, has nearly become extinct more than once and remains a breed with a dangerously small population. Because there are so few of them, they are far more susceptible to heritable ailments. Due to all this, there is not much known about the breed's health profile. There are some things that are apparent, however. It's always best to have a full battery of health tests on any dog, but it is especially essential with a Braque Saint-Germain. These dogs are believed to be prone to a fair amount of specific problems as well as may develop a number of typical concerns that all big dogs might.
