Boxer Japanese Chin Care

The Boxer-Japanese Chin is a hybrid of two breeds that are practically on opposite ends of the canine spectrum: the medium- to large-sized, athletic Boxer, and the toy-sized, dainty Japanese Chin. And while these hybrids can vary a good bit in appearance and energy level, they're sure to be loyal, affectionate, and fun-loving. Overall Boxer-Japanese Chin care won't take too much work, but will need to include moderate to frequent daily exercise--and most of all, plenty of TLC!

Here you'll find details on caring for a Boxer-Japanese Chin, including info about puppy development, exercise needs, and shedding and drooling tendencies. Get answers to your questions about raising these interesting hybrids in the following sections!

Boxer Japanese Chin Exercise Needs

Overall Boxer-Japanese Chin exercise requirements will depend on the traits these hybrids inherit from their parent breeds. If the B-JC mix is more like the Boxer, its exercise needs will be fairly extensive; if like the Chin, not so much. Regardless, B-JCs will need activities that condition them physically (walking, fetch) and stimulate them mentally (games, canine sports). They can also be good jogging companions.

Adult B-JC mixes, depending on their energy levels, will need 45-60 minutes of exercise per day. You can start exercising your B-JC puppy at three months old by going on short walks, then you can increase the walks' length as the pup grows.

Precautions with Boxer-Japanese Chin exercise:

  • Don't exercise puppies too hard before they're nine months old
  • A leash is required when exercising in public
  • Yards must be securely fenced to keep the dog from running off
  • Prone to separation anxiety; exercises must be done together with people

Most B-JC mixes need exercise every day. Especially if your B-JC is more "Boxer-esque," the dog will become frustrated, hyperactive, and destructive without consistent activity--so regular exercise will be great for both the dog's and your own peace of mind! Some exercise ideas:

  • Walking/Jogging: Two 20-minute walks (or 15-minute jogs) per day is a good target
  • Fetch/Frisbee: These hybrids usually love chasing a ball, stick, or Frisbee
  • Hide-and-Seek: Great indoor activity; give the dog a treat when it finds you
  • Dog Park: If properly socialized, B-JCs enjoy the company of other dogs
  • Canine Sports: These hybrids can excel at obedience or agility trials and other events
  • Hiking: Excellent bonding activity

When indoors, giving your B-JC access to balls or toys will allow the dog to burn excess energy. It's also good to have a regular exercise schedule for the dog, such as walks or jogs after breakfast and dinner and playtime in the afternoon.

Boxer Japanese Chin Maintenance

In terms of overall maintenance, these hybrids don't need a ton of care. Boxer-Japanese Chin shedding is moderate, and can be seasonal (meaning the shedding might be heavier during the twice-yearly shedding seasons). Drooling isn't much of an issue.

B-JC mixes can have short, smooth coats like the Boxer, or longer, silky ones like the Chin--or often somewhere in between. The coats shed a fair amount, and the shedding is sometimes more profuse when these hybrids blow their undercoats on the spring and fall. Owners can brush their B-JCs 2-3 times per week with a grooming glove (or for longer coats, with a pin brush) to help minimize the shedding, and hair cleanup--vacuuming the floors, and lint rollers on clothes and furniture--will be necessary from time to time. (If your B-JC sheds seasonally, brushing and cleanup will obviously be required more often during shedding season.)

And these hybrids don't drool much at all--possibly in anticipation of food, but that's about it. If your Boxer-Japanese Chin is drooling excessively, that night be a sign of a medical issue, in which case a veterinarian's care is needed.
