Black Russian Terrier Grooming

A Black Russian Terrier has a medium-length, thick double coat that requires a moderate amount of grooming. See below for info about coat maintenance, and for descriptions of popular hairstyles for this breed.

Black Russian Terrier Coat Care

Black Russian Terrier grooming is a moderately involved task. These dogs have medium-length, thick, double-layered coats that shed moderately and don't tangle or mat too much, so unless your BRT is to be shown, a medium amount of care should suffice. BRTs will need brushing 2-3 times per week, baths only when necessary (when the dog becomes especially dirty or stinky), and depending on your preferred hairstyle, clipping/scissoring every 3-4 months.

To brush your BRT: a slicker brush is best for this breed, and many owners say they use a wide-toothed comb as well. First, wet the coat with mist from a spray bottle. Then, starting at the shoulders, use a line brushing method on the entire coat; finish by combing through the facial furnishings with the wide-toothed comb. If you're following the brushing with a bath, use a gentle canine shampoo (and conditioner, if desired; both are available at pet stores). Towel- or blow-dry the dog, then give the coat another quick brush-through. (NOTE: A BRT's facial hair can get dirty easily when the dog eats, so you might need to clean that area regularly with a damp cloth/sponge.)

Depending on your individual needs, your BRT will need a haircut every few months. Many BRT haircuts can be done at home, but it's a good idea to visit a professional groomer at least once; the groomer can show you how to give the cut yourself, and provide you with Black Russian Terrier grooming instructions in general.

Black Russian Terrier Styling & Haircuts

This breed's thick black coat looks fantastic in a variety of hairstyles. Below are short descriptions of some popular Black Russian Terrier haircuts:

  • Show Cut: This style is the preferred one for show dogs, but it also looks great on all BRTs. Similar to a long Teddy Bear Cut, this style sees the body and leg hair trimmed slightly, then carefully rounded and sculpted with clippers. The facial furnishings are similarly rounded, and all the hair is thinned and straightened some. (NOTE: If the dog is being styled for show, be sure to check the show club's guidelines for this breed.) Probably best done by a professional groomer.
  • Puppy Cut: This style is good for warmer climates. In this cut, the Black Russian Terrier is shaved close (1-2 inches) all over; some prefer to leave the facial hair a bit longer. Can be done at home with initial instruction from a groomer.
  • Schnauzer Cut: Similar to a Puppy Cut, except the leg hair is left a bit longer, and the facial hair is trimmed to look like a Schnauzer's beard; the overall appearance makes the dog resemble a large Schnauzer. Best done by a groomer.
