The saint berdoodle is a designer dog breed which is bred by crossing a Saint Bernard with a Standard Poodle. As a designer dog breed, the saint berdoodle will inherit traits from both the poodle and saint bernard, however the traits inherited vary from dog to dog as not all saint berdoodles will receive the same traits (even if from the same litter).

Since saint berdoodles can often vary in appearance and behavior there is not a set breed standard. Because of this it is recommended that families looking to adopt a saint berdoodle to familiarize themselves with the traits of both parent breeds as it is likely the dog will have a mix of physical and behavioral characteristics from both the Poodle and Saint Bernard.

Saint Berdoodle Breed Description

Being a hybrid of the saint bernard, a very large dog breed, and the standard poodle, a medium to large breed, the saint berdoodles size is normally large, though it can favor one breeds size over the other.

The saint berdoodle can take characteristics from either the saint bernard or the poodle. This means the breed can inherit the intelligence and the strong desire to please from the poodle and/or the saint bernard's friendliness and loyalty. There is no doubt that the St Berdoodle will be a very skillful and loyal dog for all families.

Since the poodle is hypoallergenic and does not shed, the saint berdoodle can make a great pet for a family with allergies; as long as it inherits the fur traits from the poodle breed. This will require frequent trimming of the coat since it grows continuously. If the St Berdoodle takes fur traits of the saint bernard, which shed twice a year, then this may be difficult for families with allergy issues.

Saint Berdoodle Breed History

As a hybrid dog, the Saint Berdoodle was likely originally bred when the popularity of mixed breeds increased during the 1980s. Since the bloodlines of crossbreeds is not well documented, there is very little history on the breed.

Saint Berdoodle Appearance

The Saint Berdoodle will generally have a mix of physical features from both the Saint Bernard and the Poodle. However, it is not uncommon for some St Berdoodles to resemble one parent breed more so than the other.

Since the Saint Bernard is a giant dog breed, the Saint Berdoodle will likely be a very large dog as an adult. It is not uncommon for a Bernard Poodle mix to weigh as much as 160 pounds which is double the weight of their poodle parent.

The breed will either inherit the coat of the poodle or the rough coat of the Saint Bernard. If the Saint Berdoodle inherits the poodle coat, it is likely they will also inherit the hypoallergenic qualities of the poodle. However, this will be unlikely if their coat resembles the Saint Bernard.

Saint Berdoodle Variations

Like any crossbred dog, the Saint Berdoodle is described by its filial generations: F1, F1B, F2, F2B, F3, etc. The F1 is produced from the initial cross-breeding of the two pure breeds, the Saint Bernard and the Standard Poodle. If an F1 Berdoodle is bred back to a Saint Bernard (to enlarge the puppies) or a Poodle (to increase the hypoallergenic aspect of the coat), that is an F1B. When two F1 Saint Berdoodles are bred, an F2 is produced. If an F1 Berdoodle is bred back to an F1B, that is an F2B. Two F2s make an F3, and two F3's make an F4, and so on.

Saint Berdoodles have either one of two coat styles: long and curly (if he has inherited more Poodle) or long and wavy (if he has inherited more Saint Bernard). Moreover, if there is more Saint Bernard, there will also be more shedding — a lot more!

There is basically only one size of Saint Berdoodle — large — but there are those who try to make Miniature Saint Berdoodles by breeding Saint Bernards and Berdoodles with Mini and Toy Poodles.

Saint Berdoodle Temperament

The Saint Berdoodle's temperament can take after just one of the parent breeds or be a subtle mix of the Saint Bernard and the Poodle. It is difficult to accurately predict the temperament of a dog when the genetics of two breeds are used, which is why it's always important to research the behavior of both parent breeds.

It is likely that the majority of Saint Berdoodles will display behavioral characteristics which are common in both Poodles and Saint Bernards. This means you can expect a Saint Bernard Poodle cross to be a family oriented dog with a loving, affectionate, and willing to please attitude.

The Saint Berdoodle should be a very intelligent dog breed. This combined with their strong desire to please will make training and learning new tricks fairly easy for the breed.

Saint Berdoodle Maintenance

The Saint Berdoodle will likely be a low to medium maintenance dog. Some St Berdoodles will inherit ideal characteristics making them low maintenance while others may require more exercise and a higher level of grooming.

Grooming Requirements

Your Saint Berdoodle's grooming requirements are dependent upon the coat they inherit. Saint Berdoodles which inherit the Poodle's coat will likely need their coat clipped regularly as it will continue growing year round, but the coat should shed very little. Saint Berdoodles which inherit the Saint Bernard's coat will shed and will need their coat brushed 2-3 times per week to keep the coat healthy.

Exercise Requirements

The Saint Berdoodle, for the most part, will be a gentle giant. They will need daily exercise, but it will for the most part be an easy walk once or twice per day. Saint Berdoodle puppies will need to be exercised on grass rather than hard concrete until they are adult size. This is because their rapid growth is hard on their joints and connective tissue and hard concrete can exacerbate this issue.

Living Requirements

Despite being a large dog, the Saint Berdoodle prefers lying down inside next to their family rather than exploring outside. Their large size will make it easy for them to knock over small tables and chairs when excited. Potential owners should also consider that some saint berdoodles may drool heavily much like the saint bernard.

Saint Berdoodle Health

As a hybrid dog breed, you should expect the Saint Berdoodle to be healthier than the majority of purebred dogs due to their genetic diversity. With that being said, hybrid dogs can still develop health issues especially if the issue is common in both parent breeds.

Below are common health issues with the Saint Berdoodle.
