Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen Grooming

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen (PBGV) has a medium-length, double-layered coat that is quite tousled in appearance--and at first glance, one would think this breed requires a huge amount of coat maintenance. Actually, the opposite is true, as PBGV grooming is not a very time-consuming task. See below for further details on caring for the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeed coat.

Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen Coat Care

Despite the breed's tousled, shaggy coat, Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen grooming needs are only moderate. PBGVs' coats shed moderately and they may mat or tangle a little, but brushing once or twice per week should keep the shedding and tangling under control pretty well. They only require baths when they get particularly dirty or stinky. And though these dogs don't require haircuts at all--and most owners actually prefer their PBGV's tousled look--some do have their PBGVs clipped to make the coats "neater" in appearance and easier to maintain.

To brush a PBGV, you'll need both a pin brush and a 2-in-1 comb. Brushing a dog of this breed is pretty straightforward: first wet the coat with water mist from a spray bottle, then starting at the shoulders. go through the coat section by section with the pin brush, moving in the direction of hair growth. If you encounter a tangle or mat, first try working through it with your fingers, then continue working it out with the 2-in-1 comb. Finish with the legs and chest, then use the comb to neaten the facial hair.

If you're following the brushing with a bath (and your PBGV will need a thorough brushing prior to bathing): you can use either a bathtub or an outdoor kiddie pool and a garden hose. Also be sure to use canine shampoo, as the kind made for humans can irritate the dog's skin. First wet the coat thoroughly, then apply a quarter-sized amount of shampoo to the dog's back; lather well, working downward and outward as you go. (And don't forget the insides of the legs and the belly!) Lather the chest and neck last, then use a washcloth to clean the head, ears, and face. Rinse completely, towel-dry, then give the coat another quick brush-through to make it look clean and healthy.

Most owners choose not to cut their PBGVs' coats, as the dogs' rugged appearance is part of their charm--but some do have the coats clipped shorter to make them lower-maintenance. If you choose to give your PBGV a haircut, It's probably best to have a professional groomer handle the task. The groomer will provide a professional-looking cut, and can give you some general grooming tips as well.
