American Blue Gascon Hound Breed Description

The ABGH is a large-sized breed. Males are 27-30 inches at the shoulders in height, and weigh 90 pounds or more; females are 25-28 inches in height, and weigh in excess of 75 pounds.

This breed is intelligent, attentive, and loyal, and is extremely devoted to its family. As a pure hunting breed, an ABGH is task-oriented, obedient, and instinctively follows any scent it finds interesting. While good with children, these dogs are usually aggressive towards other pets, and may be reserved around strangers. But they make excellent watchdogs, and their intelligence and obedience make the very easy to train.

An ABGH will need a moderate amount of care. Brushing and bathing will be necessary only occasionally, but the long, floppy ears will need to be checked and cleaned regularly to prevent infection. A great deal of exercise will be required, but not much training will be needed.

These dogs tend to drool or slobber quite a bit. And since they are scenthounds, they will follow their noses anywhere, heedless to their owners' commands, and therefore will need to be supervised closely. These dogs also have a trademark howl that is often called a "bawl."
